NMSP District 2 — Las Vegas

The Las Vegas District is nestled at the foot of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and meets the wide-open plains of Eastern New Mexico.

Variety is definitely the spice of life! Here, in District Two, these words are expressive of not only our terrain, our cultural diversity, our history, but also our duties as New Mexico State Police Officers.

District Two includes San Miguel, Mora, Colfax, Union, and Harding Counties. By means of Interstate 25, the district begins south of Las Vegas at mile-marker 319, near the exits to the Villages of San Juan and San Jose. The district extends northward along Interstate 25 to the Colorado border, mile-marker 460, north of Raton, NM. Some of the roads within the area extend eastward and borders the States of Oklahoma and Texas. The district extends westward to the Taos County line. All in all, District Two encompasses over 16,394 square miles. Therefore, we have lots and lots of area to cover!

Since Las Vegas is the largest city in District Two’s area the majority of our officers are stationed here. We are the primary law enforcement agency, with calls for service and response to more than thirty communities.

Calls for service include not only traffic-related issues but also community-oriented concerns, namely, domestic violence, and drug and alcohol abuse. Highway Drug Interdiction is also a point of emphasis as Interstate 25 is the primary means of travel between Albuquerque and Denver, Colorado. Community Policing initiatives are also a matter of importance for officers within the district.

Officers stationed in District Two, due to the diversity in their environment and types of calls, are able to experience a little bit of everything that takes place in police work. This gives them the knowledge and experience to truly be acknowledged as New Mexico’s Finest.
